What to expect during an Abortion

To have an abortion is a difficult decision and a trained practitioner and clinic will offer strong support to ensure that your procedure proceeds smoothly.

Before The Procedure

The Abortion Law act requires that the woman undergoes brief counselling by a qualified abortion counsellor at any accredited abortion clinic, and watch a video on the subject.

Girls under 16 years of age have to undergo mandatory counselling at the Health Promotion Board Counselling Centre, except in the case of rape. They will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance (COA) without which they will not legally be allowed to have an abortion.

There is also a mandatory waiting period of 48 hours after the counselling before the procedure can be done.

Before the procedure, you will need to fast for 6 hours (no food and drinks except clear fluids /sips of water for medications).

During The Procedure

Surgical abortion is a relatively fast procedure and needs only 5-10 minutes for pregnancies up to 12-14 weeks gestation. During the procedure, a slim and soft instrument is inserted into your womb and a vacuum suction is applied to remove the womb contents.

The procedure is painless as it is performed under moderate - deep sedation.

The entire procedure including recovery takes about 1 - 2 hours. There is also no need to stay in hospital if you are doing the procedure in a clinic which is authorized by the Singapore’s Ministry of Health. In this way, there is more privacy and confidentiality.

After The Procedure

After the procedure, you will be discharged on the same day. The procedure is usually fast and convenient and the effects are similar to having a period with some period cramps. It is important to visit your doctor again for the review of the procedure 2 weeks after the abortion.
